Rachel McRae

I use the tools of present-day excavators In-Real-Life manifestations of digital material that is otherwise ephemeral, compressed or compartmentalized. My work formalizes the layers within knowledge production, highlighting collapses of linear thinking in technology’s evolution toward intuitive archiving. Combined with my amateur archeological findings from mudlarking along the Thames, my work bridges the physical, archeological detritus with sculpted matter pulled from the web. I’m interested in the obsessive, deeply subjective (sometimes violent) ways data is organized, taxonomized, preserved and excavated from its surrounding matrix. My work involves digital media and collage, expanded/live cinema performance, sculpture and installation, research-as-practice and Augmented Reality applications.
