My practice considers how artifice, humour, and queerness intersect. I paint, make vessels and prints which utilise slogans and symbols which discuss bodily function, and possess an artificial materiality in an attempt to create a queer lexicon.My practice has recently evolved from conversations I have had about the social and philosophical ideas of meals and food. I have considered the meal as a performance, and have used interjections such as wearable group tablecloths to deconstruct rules and regulations around manners. I have used the ideas which are discussed over meals within the context of my practice too.
My recent paintings and sculptures come from the information I found during my dissertation research. They reconsider the human body and its relationship to bodily function and identity. The balloon-like creatures I have created attempt to confront the viewer with an unsettling representation of themselves, or rather a version of themselves which is completely stripped down and simplified. These bodies’ sole purpose is to constantly digest and defecate. In this sense they are non-human, abject monsters.
This removal of identity signifiers has made me question the nature of bodily ambiguity, and its relationship to gender roles and personal identity, as well as queerness and androgyny. I plan on continuing to research these topics in closer depth through my future work.
